Ontario invests $36-mil into community agencies

Thursday, January 28, 2016

In an effort to help community agencies provide safer and more accessible facilities for citizens, the Ontario government is investing nearly $36 million towards upgrades and repairs at over 350 community agencies across the province.

Premier Kathleen Wynne recently announced the province’s investment, which includes $28 million that was distributed last summer and almost $8 million that was delivered in December.

“Creating safe, accessible and welcome spaces for the families, friends and neighbours who rely on our community agencies is essential,” said Premier Wynne in a press release. “Through the Partner Facility Renewal Program, our government is helping to support the critical services these agencies provide to the most vulnerable in our society.”

This funding will help such agencies as Aboriginal healing and wellness centres, violence against women community agencies and developmental services providers to maintain and improve their facilities. It will also go towards children’s treatment centres, children’s aid societies and youth centres. Approved projects include upgrading accessible restrooms, replacing windows, repairing roofs, replacing furnaces, expanding program spaces and installing carbon monoxide and fire alarms.

“Helping community agencies pay for repairs and important renovations means they can focus more on the people they serve, and les son finding the funds they need to keep their buildings safe, secure and in good repair,” said Dr. Helena Jaczek, Minister of Community and Social Services.

Funding for the Partner Facility Renewal Program was provided in December 2015 by the Ministry of Community and Social Services, which invested $4.2 million, and the Ministry of Children and Youth Services, which invested $3.5 million.
