Ontario ponders graduate studies at colleges

Friday, March 8, 2024

The Ontario government is considering taking applied technical studies to another level by offering graduate degree programs through the provincial community college system. Currently, several Ontario colleges grant bachelor’s degrees in various applied sciences and arts studies. An in-progress consultation process invites comments on potential master’s degree programs that would similarly be aligned with the pursuit of technical knowledge and research.

A summary of the government’s agenda, posted on Ontario’s regulatory registry, suggests this could be aimed at “key sectors with the targeted skill sets that employers are looking for” and programs that fill a different niche than graduate studies in the university stream. That could include “work-integrated learning opportunities” that would present students with new options.

As with applied baccalaureate degrees, community colleges would be required to meet certain conditions and obtain consent from the Minister of Colleges and Universities before launching graduate degree programs. The public can comment on the proposal until April 11.
