The world of design is an ever-changing one. That said, there is one room that has always been reserved as a place of sanctuary: the bathroom. Over the last 20 years, the bathroom has evolved into another living area as opposed to merely functioning as a hygiene space. This change is in part due to the introduction of luxurious modern finishes that help create a truly spa-like retreat.
An innovative approach to small spaces, high-tech bathroom products, and a wide range of prices are just some of the new solutions offered to accommodate any bathroom project without compromising its design integrity and oasis-like atmosphere.
Small space living
Small spaces are not just for young people anymore. Urban areas are desirable for all ages, with proximity to work and other amenities trumping the square footage found in competitive suburban dwellings. But this comes at a sacrifice, and the bath is often the first room to be downsized. But with a few smart design choices, it can maintain its integrity, even in a minimal environment.
Ensuring that every nook and cranny of space is useful and worthwhile is the name of the game in a small bathroom. Drawers are a perfect example of this. By adding an intuitive organizational system, they make storage an automatic solution and maintain the clean look that is so important in a smaller bathroom.
Use of floor space is also key. For example, a wall-hung toilet not only adds modern flair, but also increases floor space. A walk-in shower with clean glass doors helps give the illusion of an extended space. Floating vanities and open consoles also lend to this trick of the eye that create a more spacious and open room.
High-tech hygiene
In our tech-happy world, it is no surprise that these amenities have infiltrated the bathroom. It is not surprising to see everything from heated floors and towel racks, to faucets that turn on with the mere touch of a button. Furthermore, when applied to the bathroom, these products often have a significant wellness advantage.
A longtime player in the Asian and European markets, shower-toilets (sometimes referred to as washlets) are now on the rise in North America. These come with a bevy of high-tech features, including differentiated wash cycles for men and women, temperature control of air, water, and seat, child safety functions, wireless remote control, power-saving mode, and nightlight. Many also showcase a minimal design aesthetic, making them a less intimidating and more accessible hygiene experience for those unaccustomed to bidet use.
The hottest tech trend in bathrooms has to be music. Manufacturers have devised ways to subtly and safely include features like speakers and Bluetooth to everything from showerheads to medicine cabinets. Most allow multiple user preferences to be saved, making it an easy and smart solution for both hospitality and residential settings.
LED lighting has also become more prevalent due to its seemingly natural and even source of light — making it ideal for grooming and makeup application. The lights are also high-efficiency and low-voltage, with a low amount of radiated heat. And a long and easily programmed source life means minimal maintenance.
Spa stays strong
Even with the recent popularity of the aforementioned trends, the concept of spa living at home is one that is here to stay. And, thanks to the focus on compact spaces and tech solutions, the availability of spa-like products available for the home has continued to grow with exciting momentum.
With the enhancement of technology, some baths now boast a bevy of features that were previously found only outside the home in spas, like mood lighting. By displaying a delicate balance of light, the tub immerses the bather in a relaxing state designed to redistribute energy and transfer a sense of calm. This feature is only newly available for the home, lending it a distinct advantage for homeowners who desire an oasis in the bath. Tubs can come with an additional whirl system option, which combines bubble and massage for the ultimate relaxation experience.
Although saunas and steam showers are still primarily found in Europe, they are popping up more frequently in high-end residences. Also growing in popularity are deluxe pools that can be used in both indoor and outdoor settings, and include features such as remote control and lighting. For the outdoor user, they are also available with a cover for lounging.
Regardless of where the trends move, one thing will always stand above the rest: an elegant and modern design. The pairing of ‘sleek’ and ‘timeless’ will always make for the perfect bathroom match.
