A proposal to construct three mid-rise apartments at 168-180 Colborne Street in Brantford, Ontario, has been approved by city councillors. At a committee meeting in early June, attending councillors also voted in favour of the demolition permits needed to move the proposal forward.

“We’re very pleased to have a consensus to move this forward, to remove buildings that have been an eyesore for quite some time,” said Ward 1 Councillor Rick Weaver.

The proposal for the mid-rise apartments was brought to council by Barb Charest who requested a rezoning of the Brantford property to accommodate mixed-use development. The property at 168 Colborne was once home to Stelco Fasterners, an industrial building that has since been demolished.

In addition, five vacant single family detached homes located at 72-180 Colborne St, Brantford, will be demolished to make room for the proposed mid-rise apartments and commercial space, which will cover a nine-acre parcel of land at the intersection of Welsh Street, St. Mary’s Lane and Colborne Street West.

According to the proposal, the mixed-use development will also include retail/office space and a health club in addition to the new residential buildings.
