Affordable housing project started in Kelowna

Monday, January 5, 2015

A new affordable housing development in Kelowna will provide 50 apartment units for seniors and 20 townhomes for low to moderate income families in the area. Thanks to financial investments from the Governments of Canada and B.C. as well as the City of Kelowna, the project will redevelop an existing Pleasantvale Homes building, located on Kelowna’s Richter St.

The land for the development, valued at $2-million, was originally donated by the Pleasantvale Homes Society and the City of Kelowna. The Society of Hope, a registered non-profit and charity focused on providing quality, affordable housing for Kelowna residents, will manage and operate the new development.

“The city’s investment on this project will help enhance and increase the existing affordable housing options available in our city, making a real difference in the lives of all those who currently call and will call Pleasantvale home,” says Colin Basran, Mayor of the City of Kelowna. “We’d like to thank all of our partners for their support and dedication to providing for all those in need of affordable housing in this community.”

Since 2013, the Government of B.C. has provided over $10.6-million to aid in the creation of subsidized housing and rent supplements for 3,000 Kelowna households. The new Pleasantvale Homes project is scheduled for completion in spring 2016.
