Batik Blue named interior design colour of 2016

Friday, November 20, 2015

Robert Allen, an interiors industry mainstay due to the company’s use of colour in textiles, furniture and design services, has announced that Batik Blue has been named the Interior Designer Colour of the year for 2016.

The shade was selected by the Colour Experts at Robert Allen, along with runners-up Beet and Mussel Shell, as the three colours that will be very relevant in interior design throughout 2016, and over 2,000 interior designers and design aficionados voted online to select the winner. Batik Blue beat out the other colours with 40 per cent of the vote.

“Shades of blue always resonate in the design community, so it’s no surprise that Batik Blue won out!” said Hanna Alderson, design director for Robert Allen, in a press release. “This isn’t your average blue, though; Batik Blue alludes to an exotic origin and is a fresh take on a familiar hue.”

Batik Blue, an inky dark indigo; Beet, a saturated red-cast purple; and Mussel Shell, a grown-up version of periwinkle, were all chosen by Robert Allen after examining colours in style throughout history and looking at popular colours in fashion, interiors and even those that are popular online.

“Batik Blue is a particularly versatile shade,” said Alderson. “Think of your favourite pair of jeans and how you pair them with everything in your closet, regardless of colour, pattern or texture. We see Batik Blue the same way, as a backdrop to all colours, whether calm and neutral or bright and funky.”

Batik Blue, Beet and Mussel Shell will all be featured in Robert Allen’s Spring 2016 Colour Library: Drenched Colour collection, to be launched in January at Deco Off in Paris.
