The Calgary Public Library, Fish Creek branch has been included in American Libraries Magazine’s 2024 Library Design Showcase. This annual feature celebrates new and newly renovated libraries of all types, highlighting examples of innovative library architecture to support patrons in unique, interesting, and effective ways.
Designed by BRZ Partnership Architecture, the thoughtful renovation approach impressed American Libraries, with a unique balance of spaces for all to enjoy.
As part of an extensive lifecycle renovation completed earlier this year, Fish Creek Library – the largest community library in the city – was celebrated as the new home of Engine 23, a decommissioned fire truck. Engine 23 is a cornerstone design feature on the second floor, as an immersive playing and learning experience for children and families. It provides a hands-on approach to literacy skill-building and safety education.
From the fire truck to a new quiet study area, 10 new meeting rooms, and a fresh look and feel throughout the entire space, Fish Creek Library has been completely refreshed as a bright and welcoming place for its 290,000+ annual visitors. The smooth wood paneling, sleek and clean customer service desks, and warm and welcoming nooks all add to the sophisticated, yet fun and approachable ambiance.
“Libraries are transformative spaces, and that starts with the design,” said Sarah Meilleur, CEO of Calgary Public Library. “Fish Creek is one of 21 Library locations, each one home to creative, engaging spaces that support our community. Through this re-design, we have created destination spaces with a wow factor for children, gathering areas for community through additional meeting rooms, spaces for quiet and reflection, biophilic elements that contribute to community wellness, and more. This Fish Creek renovation is an example of how Calgary Public Library continually works to remove barriers and design spaces where everyone can realize their potential.”
More than 100,000 thousand people have been through Fish Creek Library since the renovation was completed in April 2024.
