Corner Brook city hall achieves LEED silver

Friday, October 11, 2013

Corner Brook’s city hall is the first commercial building in Newfoundland and Labrador to achieve a LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) silver rating.

“This building, in its design, construction and operation, highlights the City’s commitment to environmental protection and demonstrates that sustainability is at the heart of what we do,” says Corner Brook’s Mayor, Charles Pender.

Designed by BAE Newplan Group Ltd., a subsidiary of the SNC-Lavalin Group, the building was recognized for its:

  • Green roof, which reduces the heat island effect of the building while reducing stormwater run-off;
  • Geothermal heating system, which saves approximately 496 metric tonnes of greenhouse gas each year;
  • Low-flow plumbing fixtures;
  • Rainwater collection system; and
  • Use of low “E” glazed windows, which maximize the amount of natural light within the building and increase insulation, resulting in reduced energy consumption.
