Northlands and the City of Edmonton have recently revealed the design for an updated Rexall Place and the 160 acre Northlands site. Designed by DIALOG and BBB Architects, the designs envision the arena for the Edmonton Oilers as a two-level, multiplex ice coliseum.
The design includes four NHL-size rinks, as well as one international and two smaller ice sheets, which may place Edmonton as the top hockey tournament location in Canada. The overhaul also includes transforming Hall D of the EXPO Centre into a 5,000 seat event venue, and the creation of an outdoor event centre.
“Northlands asked us to envision what the next evolution of their campus could look like. The multiplex pays homage to the site’s history and activates the area with people seven days a week. The result is a community that is vibrant, safe and walkable,” said architect Stephen Boyd in a press release. “In the long-term, the facility has the potential to attract hotels, restaurants and other amenities that will further support the Northlands’ commitment to be a community service organization.”
