Hartland MacDougall, founding chairman of Heritage Canada The National Trust (HCNT) has passed away, leaving behind a lifetime of personal and professional achievements.
Born in Montreal, MacDougall went on to play many leading roles in the financial sector. He was director and vice-chairman of the Bank of Montreal, chairman of Royal Trustco Ltd., director and deputy chair of the London Insurance Group and chairman of the Canada Japan Business Council.
Among other various leadership roles MacDougall served on the Canadian Olympic Foundation, was a senator of the Stratford Festival and acted as chairman of the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair. He was also the founding chairman of the Governor’s Council of St. Michael’s Hospital where he assumed the role of director for forty years.
His accolades are both numerous and notable. He was Commander of the Royal Victorian Order, an officer of the Order of Canada, Knight Commander (inactive) of the Order of St. Lazarus of Jerusalem and received the Order of the Rising Sun Gold and Silver Star from the Emperor of Japan.
During his long tenure at HCNT, through which he became the inaugural recipient of the Gabrielle Léger Medal for Lifetime Achievement in Heritage Conservation, he was also the international chairman of the Duke of Edinburgh Award, a prestigious youth award to which he was both committed and enthused to preserve.
