Hamilton facility wins top AIA green award

Friday, May 1, 2015

The American Institute of Architects (AIA) Committee on the Environment (COTE) has named a Diamond Schmitt Architects’ building as one of the top ten green projects of 2015.

The CANMET Materials Technology Laboratory in Hamilton, Ontario is a 174,300-square-foot, LEED Platinum certified lab and office space located at McMaster Innovation Park, a new 37-acre campus development.

CANMET is the anchor tenant and first new building in this growing government, research and institutional community. The sustainable structure sets a framework for transforming the campus from an underutilized brownfield site to a sustainable community.

The jury called CANMET a “thoughtful building, and not the typical sort that attains high performance.” In addition, they admired how the different elevations address the climatic response.

“There was thought put into solar control, the solar thermal space and photo-voltaic systems,” the jury said. “The displacement ventilation system in the office and laboratory spaces saves energy and provides comfort.”

COTE serves as the community and voice on behalf of AIA architects regarding sustainable design.
