Interior Designers of Nova Scotia (IDNS), the province’s regulatory association, celebrates its 10th anniversary with practice legislation on Friday, November 7, 2014. Only individuals registered with IDNS are entitled to use the term “interior designer” and provide interior design services by virtue of the Interior Designers Act of Nova Scotia. Nova Scotia is the only Canadian province with such an Act.

“This is a milestone event for the profession of interior design, not only locally, but also nationally and internationally,” says Interior Designers of Canada CEO, Susan Wiggins. “It is our hope that this anniversary will pave the way towards a better understanding of the important role interior designers play in protecting the health, safety and welfare of the public by granting legislative authority.”

A professional interior designer must adhere to standards of practice, ethical principles and continuous learning to ensure competency is maintained throughout their career. Members of IDNS are also required to carry liability insurance. “We are thrilled to be celebrating the hard work and talent of our members, and the government’s recognition of our role,” says association President, Dede Hiscock.

“Celebrating 10 years with practice legislation means that the public can rest assured that when they hire an interior designer because that individual is held to the highest standards of a regulated profession.” Friday’s celebration is expected to garner 200 individuals from Nova Scotia’s design, business, media, and real estate communities. The event will take place at the Via Rail Train Station and will feature a silent auction and wine tasting among other activities.
