Industry loses noted architect Brian L. Curtner

Tuesday, August 18, 2015

With great sadness, Quadrangle Architects shared that founding principal Brian Curtner passed away Saturday from cancer. He was 64.

Brian co-founded Quadrangle with Les Klein in 1986. He is credited with playing an instrumental role in building the highly successful architecture practice, which today has a staff of 140 and a portfolio of projects reaching from Toronto to across the globe.

Corus Entertainment’s state-of-the-art headquarters and broadcast facilities on Toronto’s waterfront is among Brian’s exemplary designs. So is 130 Bloor St. W., a condominium development erected atop an existing modernist office tower in Yorkville that the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada recognized with an Innovation in Architecture award. He is also behind the vision for the revitalization of the Yonge Sheppard Centre, a large mixed-used development that recently secured planning approvals.

Brian graduated from the Architectural Association School of Architecture in London, England. He was licensed to practice in eight Canadian provinces and was elected to the College of Fellows of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada and the Simcoe Chapter of Lambda Alpha International.

As an active member of numerous professional associations, Brian served on boards of directors including that of NAIOP’s Toronto Chapter. He was a principal at the firm Curtner Brown Architects before going on to co-found Quadrangle.

Brian is survived by his wife, Christine Raissis; children, Anna (David Ransom) and Ross (Daphne Hemily); stepchildren, Stefan and Michaela Ruby; and grandchildren, James and Isabel Ransom.

Quadrangle will honour Brian’s life and achievements alongside his family at a memorial celebration due to take place soon. The firm will provide details on its website once arrangements are finalized.

Brian’s family is welcoming donations in his memory to Temmy Latner Centre for Palliative Care at Mount Sinai Hospital and Odette Cancer Centre at Sunnybrook Hospital.
