There are now more than 1000 LEED Gold-certified buildings in Canada that make up 38 per cent of all LEED certification in the country, according to the Canadian Green Building Council (CaGBC).
This Q1 2016 milestone is also being celebrated in tandem with the announcement that LEED projects have cumulatively reduced more than one million tonnes of CO2e in greenhouse gas emissions, equal to an annual removal of 238,377 cars from the road.
“These two milestones are a tribute to the efforts of the Canadian green building industry who have been at the forefront of the push toward a low-carbon economy,” says Thomas Mueller, resident and chief executive officer of the CaGBC. “Owners and developers, practitioners and builders didn’t wait to take action but have led the charge toward maximizing the environmental and health benefits of building projects across the country.”
At the moment, there are 2,675 LEED certified projects in Canada, with 106 registrations and 91 certifications completed during the first three months of 2016. The year-to-date totals tallied up to March 2016 include:
- 18 LEED Certified
- 32 LEED Silver
- 35 LEED Gold
- 6 LEED Platinum
Notable projects in Q1 include Telus Garden Office Tower (LEED Platinum), The Quispamsis Q-Plex Sports and Wellness Centre in Quispamsis, New Brunswick (LEED Gold), and The Pine Grove Correctional Centre in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan (LEED Gold).
