Wednesday, March 12, 2014

A New Brunswick government program is aiming to help individuals living with disabilities pay for adequate housing. The Portable Rent Supplement for Persons with Disabilities Program will provide eligible participants with a monthly government subsidy to obtain and maintain their tenancy within a housing development that accommodates their specific needs.

“The provincial government is investing $225,000 to create and implement the Portable Rent Supplement for Persons with Disabilities Program,” says Madeleine Dubé, New Brunswick Social Development Minister. “I am pleased that our government’s commitment to fund this program will provide a monthly subsidy to help persons with disabilities obtain affordable, adequate and suitable rental accommodations of their choice.”

In order to qualify for the program, applicants must either:

  • Be currently living in an crowded or inadequate dwelling;
  • Be spending 30 per cent or more of income on housing;
  • Require special purpose accommodation; or
  • Have a total household income at or below the Housing Income Limit (varies by household size and region)

“Our government is committed to helping people with disabilities obtain access to the support and services they need to reach their potential,” Dubé says. “Through initiatives such as this, we are reaffirming our commitment.”
