A group of developers are reimagining what Ottawa’s LeBreton Flats will become with their proposal to redevelop the 55 acre parcel of land, located west of Parliament Hill.
Devcore, Canderel and DLS Group comprised of André Desmarais, Guy Laliberté, William J. Sinclair and the Mierins Family (DCDLS Group) see the project as a true city-building initiative and future world-class gathering place, with more than half the site dedicated to open spaces and public facilities like museums, an aquarium and planetarium. Part of the plan includes bringing professional hockey into the downtown core with an 18,500-seat entertainment and sports centre capable of hosting an NHL team.
Also, a mixed use precinct will offer retail, commercial, residential and program uses to encourage a live-work-play lifestyle. A modern urban village with senior and student housing condos and rental units is also in the works, along with a school, YMCA, Canadian retail outlets and a new city library.
“This is a nationally inspired proposal that we believe represents the interests and aspirations of not only those who live and work in Canada’s capital, but of Canadians from every part of our great country,” stated Jean-Pierre Poulin, president of Devcore Group.
Going by the name LeBreton Re-Imagined, the project is expected to roll out in three phases. However, launching in time for Canada’s 150th birthday celebrations in 2017 will be the Bandshell and Canadensis Walk, a connective linear park that will span the length of the development.
The LeBreton Re-imagined proposal is one of two pre-qualified bids undertaken by the National Capital Commission (NCC). The NCC is expected to announce the successful proponent in early 2017.
