Cathedraltown, located east of Highway 404 between Major Mackenzie Drive and Elgin Mills Road in Markham, Ont., will soon host the official launch of The Courtyards, taking place from April 29 to May 1. The Courtyards is the first phase of a Piazza development that will surround the Cathedral of the Transfiguration located in the heart of the town.
The Courtyards will consist of two five-storey buildings featuring one, two and three bedroom and multi-level condominium suites above street-level retail space. Residential units will range from 634 to 2,728 square feet, priced from $336,900 to $1,399,000. Surrounding the residential buildings will be a courtyard created for the enjoyment of residents and their guests.
The Piazza’s design is based on the concept created for Cathedraltown by Donald Buttress, a renowned British architect and 13th Surveyor of the Fabric of Westminster Abbey.
The Cathedral of the Transfiguration was first imagined by the late Stephen B. Roman, who wanted the Cathedral to act as a beacon for people of Slavic descent that, at the time, did not have religious freedom. The Cathedral’s cornerstone was blessed by Pope John Paul II in 1984.
Roman’s daughter, Helen Roman-Barber, built on her father’s vision by beginning development of the site surrounding the Cathedral in 2006 with the construction of single- and multi-family homes in the Georgian and Regency styles. This area became known as Cathedraltown.
Cathedraltown is currently home to its first retail shops, located on High Street. It also features an Arboretum, Heritage Orchard and nearby schools, and is the first development of its kind in North America.
Phase II of the Piazza will be called Market Square and Surveyor’s Square, and will include four mid-rise buildings that will house offices, boutiques, restaurants and cafes as well as condominium units.
Phase III will be known as Stephen B. Roman Boulevard. This phase will consist of residential buildings flanking the grand boulevard that leads to the Cathedral’s entrance.
Construction of The Courtyards is slated to begin later this year, with occupancy expected in early 2018.
