The standing committee on finance and economic affairs plans to hold public hearings on Bill 106, the Protecting Condominium Owners Act, on Oct. 22 and 29 in Toronto, according to an online notice posted on the Legislative Assembly of Ontario website.

Those interested in making an oral presentation on Bill 106 must contact the clerk of the committee by noon on Monday, Oct. 19, to be considered. Those interested in submitting written comments on the proposed legislation must send them to the clerk of the committee by 6 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 29.

In a statement on its website, the Canadian Condominium Institute’s (CCI) Toronto chapter indicates that the joint CCI/ACMO (Association of Condominium Managers of Ontario) legislative committee plans to attend these hearings to provide comments on the bill. It will also be submitting a brief with suggestions to the Ministry of Government and Consumer Services. In a note on its website, ACMO says it will represent association members in a presentation at the hearings.

The Protecting Condominium Owners Act was referred to standing committee on Oct. 7, after unanimously passing second reading. At committee stage, lawmakers review bills in detail and consider amendments before reporting them back to the provincial legislature for a third reading and final vote.

If passed, Bill 106 would update the Condominium Act, introduce the Condominium Management Services Act and amend other legislation including the Ontario New Home Warranties Plan Act. Unless and until the bill is proclaimed into law, the existing Condominium Act (1998) remains in effect.
