A new rental housing complex in Prince Albert, Sask. will help individuals with complex needs access safe and affordable housing. Funding for the project, which required a total investment of approximately $725,000, was provided by the Canadian government, the Province of Saskatchewan and the River Bank Development Corporation (River Bank). River Bank is a non-profit organization promoting social and economic development for low-income individuals in Prince Albert.

“Together with our partners, our Government remains committed to supporting those in greatest housing need,” says Victoria Jurgens, Member of Legislative Assembly for Prince Albert Northcote. “Housing is a vital part of a strong Saskatchewan and we know there is a close relationship between the availability of safe, quality and affordable housing and quality of life for all Saskatchewan citizens. This project builds upon this vision, and we are proud to be a part of it.”

The new development, located at 3096 – 5A Avenue East, includes six 560-square-foot one-bedroom units, one of which is designed to be barrier-free. The facility was created for individuals with complex needs or disabilities.

Together, the Governments of Canada and Saskatchewan contributed $455,000, in equal parts, for the construction of the project. Through mortgage financing and cash equity, River Bank provided the remaining funding in the amount of $270,000. Since 2007, the Saskatchewan government has helped the City of Prince Albert develop 24 affordable rental housing units for persons with complex needs and 74 new units are currently under construction.
