Tech-heavy Edmonton Sport Chek location opens

Sport Chek’s new 80,000-square-foot flagship store at the West Edmonton Mall is taking tech integration to the next level.

The new location, which opened on February 5, offers consumers a digital retail experience through product displays and interactive experiences that using touch, gesture and radio-frequency identification (RFID) technologies.

“Our new flagship store in West Edmonton Mall is the most digitally advanced and personalized retail experience in the world,” says Michael Medline, president of Canadian Tire Corporation. “We have created an energy filled experience for anyone who is passionate about a great customer experience and shopping for an unparalleled array of sporting goods.”

The flagship store, which Medline says is going to be used as a model for future Canadian locations, includes special features like:

  • 800 screens that display product images and deals
  • Medical motion gait analysis to help customers find the perfect shoe
  • Wintersteiger Mercury tuning: a professional-grade machine that is capable of tuning up to 60 pairs of skis per hour
  • Swing catalyst and flightscope for testing golf clubs and analyzing swings
  • 80 tablets
  • 1,200 square feet of digital projection

“Digital is the next step for retail,” says Chris Riegel, CEO of Stratacache, the corporation behind the store’s content management system. “Sport Chek understands this and with the opening of the flagship store has proven they can lead it.”
