Toronto housing complex aids hearing impaired

Wednesday, December 4, 2013

A new Toronto affordable rental housing complex designed to accommodate seniors and the hearing impaired opened its doors on November 29.

8 Chichester Place, a 20-storey rental housing facility in Scarborough, was developed by The Remington Group Inc. Ten one-bedroom and 11 two-bedroom units out of the 210 total apartments are equipped with strobe lights to visually notify tenants of fire alarms and inbound phone calls.

“The Remington Group is proud to have been a part of the team that created this wonderful building, with its special features for hearing impaired tenants,” says Rudy Bratty, chair and CEO of the company. “Working with the federal, provincial and municipal governments and the Rob Rumball Centre (for the Deaf), we have been able to give something back to the community.”

The provincial and federal government provided $25.2 million in funding for the project, with an additional $3 million supplied by the City of Toronto through waived property taxes and development expenses.

Units range from 540–1,000 square feet. And as part of the Canada-Ontario Affordable Housing Program, they are rented out at approximately 80 per cent of Toronto’s rental average.

  1. Hi There – I am contacting you on behalf of my friend who is very hearing impaired.
She is 69 years old and is currently recovering from a hip operation.
She can’t stay at her apartment in Downtown Toronto anymore.
How much are your apartments and how long is the wait time?
    Thanks very much much.
    Elaine
