A new survey from the International Facility Management Association (IFMA) finds that many of the surveyed organizations have increased the number of staff sitting in unassigned spaces, as compared to the IFMA report from 2009. Organizations also reported a decrease in the amount of space required to accommodate unassigned staff.

“Our workplace research confirmed that distributed work strategies are here to stay,” said Gordon Wright, Director of Consulting at HOK, co-author and co-sponsor of the report, in a press release. “The key for organizations across the world is to understand how to modify these workplace strategies over time to keep pace with the changing needs of their people and operations.”

The report, called “Distributed Work Revisited,” identifies trends across industry categories, primarily in Canada and the United States. IFMA found that in order to achieve organizational goals, many workplaces implemented a strategy to grow in number without growing in real estate.
