Walmart Canada has unveiled its first store that solely features LED lighting.
The Stratford, Ont. supercentre has 3,000 18-watt LED lights that are expected to reduce energy consumption by 28 per cent and save approximately $18,000 per year.
“As we continue to work towards our goal of operating with 100 per cent renewable energy, it’s important for us to also look at ways to reduce or avoid energy usage wherever possible,” says Jim Thompson, executive vice-president of real estate and store development at Walmart Canada. “Lighting the Stratford supercentre with LED lights allows us to provide our customers with an improved shopping environment and make our store less energy intensive.”
After an LED-lighting retrofit at Walmart’s Brampton North supercentre, the retailer made the decision to implement the changes in other Ontario locations including Oakville, Vaughan, Maple, Whitby and Bolton. These transitions will take place within the next four months.
All of the LED light fixtures were sourced from an Ontario-based lighting manufacturer, making the products local and reducing greenhouse gas emissions produced by transport.
