Winnipeg unveils intergenerational housing plan

Thursday, January 16, 2014

A 92-unit intergenerational apartment project in Winnipeg has been named as part of the provincial government’s commitment to construct 500 affordable rental units in the next three years.

The Paul E. Martin Estates development, located in Transcona, will focus on the needs of low-income families and seniors.

Sponsored by the Winnipeg Housing Rehabilitation Corporation (WHRC), the project will feature a four-storey wing with 47 units for seniors, and a six-storey wing for families that will feature 45 units. The wings will be connected by a two-storey common area.

The governments of Canada and Manitoba will fund the project, estimated at over $25.9 million. The WHRC development will be the first of its kind in the Transcona area.

“Our government is committed to working with Manitoba to develop and implement local solutions to housing,” says Lawrence Toet, Member of Parliament for Elmwood-Transcona. “This investment is helping families and seniors of Winnipeg access safe and affordable housing that meets their needs.”

  1. I a thrilled with the concept, location and the thought that as a senior I might have the good fortune of living there and be close to my family again with all of us living in Transcona!

  2. Hello i am just so pleased these bldgs are being built. I am hoping i will be able to get into the senior wing. I am turning 65 in 2016 and will not be able to afford an apt on the pensions. I have been on work disability since 2005 and cannot use my hands for any kind of emplyement. I can only take care of my personal needs. I was turned down for the cpp disability, therefore will have the lower cpp pension when i retire, as they will penilize me for the years from 2005 til 2016. Drop out years. Wish i could get my name on the list. There are so many low income families in transcona that need low income housing. I am so glad to see they might be able to get a break. I am truly thankful. Sincerely Barb Donald.
